WATER NEEDS: For “forcing Paperwhites”, check the moisture level in the pot every couple of weeks, and water accordingly. Aim for moist but never soggy and let the soil dry slightly between watering. The white, fragrant flowers usually open within 4-6 weeks of planting. Will Paperwhite bulbs grow outside? Yes, with a little water, they rapidly form roots, grow leaves and shoots. They grow in the proper zone if you get them into the soil in fall or give them a cold period before planting. After planting, check soil moisture regularly. When the top half-inch begins to feel dry water and repeat until Spring!
SUNLIGHT NEEDS: Regardless of what they’re growing in, Paperwhites growing indoors do best in bright sun. If you’re going to use them as a centerpiece but your dining room is usually in the dark, grow the bulbs in the sun and move them to the center of the action right before the party. Unlike their daffodil relatives, Paperwhites won’t tolerate freezing temperatures, but they can be planted outdoors where winters are mild. Plant them in the fall in well-draining soil that receives full sun, just as you would other spring-flowering bulbs. Check the area in April to May and you will start to see the green shoots of the foliage forcing their way through the soil.
TEMPERATURE: For indoor growing place pots in a cool room (around 55 to 60 degrees) for 7 to 10 days to stimulate roots. Then move to a warm spot (around 70 degrees) with bright light to encourage foliage and flowers. As buds swell and open, move the pot to a cooler spot out of direct light to extend the life of the flowers. Non-chilled bulbs like Paperwhites may be replanted outside in zones 8 and higher after they’ve bloomed indoors but be aware that they may not bloom again for another two years. For outdoor growing the bulbs prefer warm temperatures of at least 70 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night. The flowers are not hardy in freezing temperatures and are only suitable in USDA zones 8 to 10. You should start to see the angelic white flowers bloom 6-10 weeks after planting.
